Since 1858, Wheaton Lodge 269 has been an essential part of Wheaton, IL, founded in 1859, and in the rich history of our great country. Lieutenant Marcellus Jones, a 5-time Past Master of the Lodge is reputed to have fired the first shot at the Battle of Gettysburg. Freemasonry was almost completely wiped out in Germany during World War II. However, shortly after the war it was rebuilt and thrives to this day. Peter Rasmussen, who was initiated, passed, and raised in Wheaton Lodge 269 in 1925 and served as Master in 1932, is often credited as one of the leaders of the rebuilding of Freemasonry in Germany.

If you’ve driven by the building any time recently, in the last 50 years or so, you’ll notice it doesn’t look like it did in this picture. In 1949 a fire nearly destroyed the building entirely. The center window shown in this picture is now at the top of the building, the level including the windows above it is now gone. You’ll also notice the front entry door is in the center of the building, whereas now it is located on the far left side of the building near the parking lot.

Another famous name that frequented this building while still in its original condition is none other than the late Pastor Billy Graham. While attending Wheaton College, this was the building where he got his start. He would fill the lodge each Sunday to preach to Wheaton residents.

Today, Wheaton Lodge continues to support the community in a variety of ways. The Lodge sponsors the Wheaton North Academic Bowl team every year, supports food pantries, and hosts a monthly job club meeting called the Jobs Driven Networking Group to help job seekers network for jobs. This event is free to attend and meets every 3rd Thursday from 12:10pm to 12:50pm. Click here to RSVP.
